I work at a library system in the IT department. We have computers that are set up for the public to use. We started deploying Windows 10 computers almost two years ago as PCs were due for replacement. Recently a library staff member submitted a ticket to us because members were complaining that they were having to click OK on a box (the How do you want to open this file? dialog box) listing applications when opening files with the .pdf extension. Reader was the default and it was easy to click OK but users don’t like to click on buttons.

I ran across this TechNet article that was super helpful. We indeed use a GPO and a .xml file to set the file type associations on our computers. After looking into the ticket, we also set the GPO to “Do not show the ‘new application installed’ notification”, which is the dialog box discussed above. Microsoft 10 wants to open .pdf files in Microsoft Edge so Microsoft pushes that on users anyway that they can.

I hope that this post and the TechNet article helps anyone looking into Windows 10 and file associations.
