So today, the support desk at my job ran into a slightly odd issue with regards to a Windows 7 corporate machine saying it was not genuine. It didn't seem odd at first, just point it to the KMS server and activate, right?

Well, for some reason, this compute was pointed to a KMS server that hadn't existed in a LONG time and must have been sitting in a non-activated state for some point (though how long is unknown). So we pointed it to the correct license server with the

cscript slmgr.vbs /skms <servername>
command, then we went to activate with
cscript slmgr.vbs /ato

We got a strange error when trying to activate that said "Windows is running within the non-genuine notification period." and the activation failed. First few searches online mention hacked licenses and corrupt files... neither of which were the case. I wondered if it didn't activate because it was too far past its activation grace period, so I tried a Rearm,

cscript slmgr.vbs /rearm

After running that, it said it was successful but a reboot was required to take effect. In actuality, all you need to do is restart the Software Protection service (sppsvc) for it to take effect.

After that I immediately ran the activation command and the machine successfully activated.

I thought this was a bit strange and am unsure of whether it's inadvertently related to some upgrades we performed on the KMS server or not (upgrading to Server 2016 with latest patches), but figured I'd share just in case anyone else runs into this.
